My
clients are people in the
Greater Washington
DC Metro Area who are
experiencing cognitive,
behavioral, emotional,
academic, or social difficulties that interfere
with their quality of life and their ability to function effectively in
work,
school, and life. They also are
committed to improving their day-to-day functioning and
enhancing their effectiveness in their careers, relationship, and
personal life.
Some
of the difficulties
facing
my clients include anxiety;
depression;
stress-related conditions; learning and memory problems;
attention-deficits;
behavior management problems; poor self-esteem; family conflicts;
relationship
dissatisfaction; and problems with goal-setting, organization,
motivation, and
following through with tasks.
The
good news is that you
can do something about that stress or illness.
Are
any of these
statements true for you?
In
the
workplace and at home, stress and other
difficult situations are at an all-time high. You
worry excessively and
can’t concentrate. The way you feel is affecting your sleep,
your eating
habits, your job, your relationships, and your everyday life.
You’d like to
improve your ability to bounce back from challenging situations.
You feel an overwhelming and
prolonged sense of helplessness and
sadness, and your problems do not seem to get better
despite your
efforts and help from family and friends. You are finding it difficult
to carry out everyday activities. For example, you are unable to
concentrate on assignments at work, and your job performance is
suffering as a result. You need help to regain a sense of control and
pleasure in life.
Suddenly,
your
heart starts racing, you can't catch your
breath, and you feel dizzy. Experiences
like eating out in a
restaurant seem to trigger a panic attack. You begin thinking about all
the different
situations where the attacks might happen, and tend to avoid those
places. In
many ways, fear is controlling your life. You want to develop skills
for
regulating your emotions.
You are
encountering school
performance problems in your school-age
child. You
feel
completely lost and overwhelmed by a range of child behavior
problems,
family tensions, emotional reactions, and schoolwork performance
problems; and need a clear
understanding of the problems and what to do about them.
Your child is struggling in
school, and is not achieving at
a level consistent with his or her ability, but the
problems are not
necessarily severe enough to meet the school’s criteria of a
learning
disability. You still wonder about a possible attention
disorder or learning problem, and would like to get a thorough
evaluation of
your child’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses.
You are
experiencing problems
with your memory and your
ability to sustain attention when trying to perform your
everyday
activities, and
are
worried that you might be suffering from some form of dementia. You
need
reliable information about your cognitive strengths and weaknesses, and
a clear
game plan for remediation.
The people
who have
appreciated my services the most have
been those who have
struggled to cope with disabling emotional, behavioral, and social
difficulties but who have needed
the thorough
evaluation
and clear game plan I have provided.
My clients typically share many
of
the following characteristics. If
most of them fit you as well, you are likely to be someone I can help
to improve
your level of functioning and enhance your well-being. My ideal clients:
Are
open to change -- they realize
that if
they want different results they need to try new approaches;
Are
action oriented and
committed to getting things done;
Are committed
to being at their best, they are no
longer willing to tolerate emotional distress,
reduced effectiveness, or a decreased level of functioning;
Want
to learn
and take responsibility for
establishing and maintaining a
good working relationship -- they realize that psychotherapy and
personal coaching
are
joint ventures that work especially well when clients and their
therapists
communicate openly;
Realize
that personal growth is a process that requires
time and energy and isn’t an overnight
event. There is no magic pill to fix you;
Are
clear about expectations and
share any concerns that may arise;
Attend
all
scheduled sessions, complete
“homework” assignments between sessions, and give
some forethought to what they
want to discuss during each session, and
Realize
that the highest
quality of health care is often not the cheapest or a
covered insurance
benefit -- they have decided it is worth working and
paying for.
